Hi! I'm Matt. I'm a developer from Waterloo, Ontario. I currently work at Desire2Learn on the User Experience Platform team. When I'm not coding there I teach continuing education classes at Conestoga College. Whether it's a user-interface or a database query, I like things to be clean, simple, and effective.
Even more about me ...
Some things I can do ...
- Client Side (HTML, CSS, JS)
- Server Side (PHP, C#, Node.js, Python)
- Databases (MySQL, SQLServer, Access)
- Progressive Enhancement
- Responsive Design
- Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word)
- Design (PhotoShop, Fireworks)
I was born and grew up in London, Ontario where I attended the University of Western Ontario and studied Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science.
With my brain full of formulae and calculations, I found myself needing a break. I wandered through Europe, Africa, and Asia off and on over the next 4 years. I worked as a waiter in a Mexican restaurant in Cape Town, South Africa and taught English in Seoul, South Korea.
After returning to Canada, I went back to school (at Trent University) to become a certified High School teacher in Ontario (specializing in Physics, Computer Science, and Mathematics).
5 things you didn't know...
- I don't have a TV
- I once touched a honey badger
- I was almost killed by a murderous baboon
- I used to be a lifeguard
- Yes bro, I lift
I found myself teaching people how to use everything from Microsoft Excel to Visual Basic to PHP at Conestoga College. I was the lead instructor for a intensive, 52 week retraining program that prepared students to join the flock as Web Designers and Developers. We covered everything from Photoshop to C#.NET to e-Commerce site design.
I also work as a freelance web and application developer. I help local area businesses make their ideas a digital reality.
In my free time, I am a proud father and husband and am always finding excuses to take my kids to African Lion Safari.
